Nearly forty years ago, Ralph Martin's bestselling A Crisis of Truth exposed the damaging trends in Catholic teaching and preaching that, combined with attacks from secular society, threatened the mission and life of the Catholic Church. While much has been done to counter false teaching over the last four decades, today the Church faces even more insidious threats from outside and within.

In A Church in Crisis: Pathways Forward, Martin offers a detailed look at the growing hostility to the Catholic Church and its teaching. With copious evidence, Martin uncovers the forces working to undermine the Body of Christ and offers hope to those looking for clarity.

A Church in Crisis covers:

  • polarization in the Church caused by ambiguous teachings
  • initiatives that accommodate the culture without calling for conversion
  • Vatican-sponsored partnerships with organizations that actively contradict the teaching of the Catholic Church
  • and the recycling of theological errors long settled by Vatican II, Pope St. John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI.

Powerfully written, A Church in Crisis reminds all readers to heed Jesus' express command not to lead His children astray. With ample resources to encourage readers, Ralph Martin provides the solid foundation of Catholic teaching both Scripture and Tradition to fortify Catholics against the errors that threaten us from all directions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In this book Dr. Martin is squarely facing the serious crisis that is unfolding both in the Church and in the culture. He does so in an honest but fair manner and offers solutions that, if implemented, would do a great deal to restore health and strength to the Church, and allow it to be the light to the world it is meant to be. An important book that should be widely read."
Cardinal Gerhard L. Müller, Former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

"It is impossible to deny the crisis of division and widespread confusion that characterizes the Church in our day. Nor can anyone who loves the Church ignore the strong theological undercurrents that Dr. Martin identifies, currents that try to separate what cannot be legitimately divided: pastoral charity from revealed truth. This is an important book well worth reading."
Bishop Scott McCaig, C.C.
Military Ordinary of Canada

"This book is a massive achievement. Ralph Martin is one of the most reliable analysts of the state of the Church. He is brave and bold, outspoken but never snarky or alarmist. Some of his chapters, such that on culpability, shed fresh light on some of the most debilitating confusions of our age. This book will be the go-to book for those who want a comprehensive view of the crisis in the Church today."
Janet Smith, Author of
Self-Gift: Humanae Vitae and the Thought of John Paul II

"Ralph Martin's new book is the clear blast of a trumpet, a bright light in the midst of a fog of confusion and apathy. Its analysis of the present crisis in the Church is profoundly sobering, but not dispiriting. No, God himself is at work to purify and renew his Church, and this book will inspire both clergy and laity to collaborate in that work through soul-searching, repentance, courage, zeal for holiness, and a renewed hope in the victory of the risen Lord."
Mary Healy

"Ralph Martin's remarkable book provides an extraordinary opportunity to engage in a self-examination of our 'own faithfulness to Christ's will for the Church and accordingly to undertake with vigor the task of renewal and reform' (Vatican II, Unitatis Redintegratio 4)…. His book simply could not have come at a better time."
Eduardo J. Echeverria, Professor of Philosophy and Systematic Theology, Sacred Heart Major Seminary

"The crisis of truth is back. An unblinking analysis of these toxic threats to the Church is once again desperately needed, but while many have provided elements of such an analysis, few have proffered so sweeping an evaluation while retaining admirable balance and evincing heartfelt love for the Church. Yet Dr. Martin goes further still in this book, which I do not hesitate to call prophetic. He points the way forward by holding fast to Scripture, rejecting the rationalization of sin and the false security of universalism, and recommending the proven remedies of repentance and reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit."
Fr. Peter Ryan, S.J. Professor of Theology, Director of Spiritual Formation, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Former Executive Director USCCB Committee on Doctrine

"The Catholic Church is in deep crisis. It doesn't take a genius to see that. However, to present an accurate and synthetic picture of the crisis, to identify its roots, and to indicate the path forward takes more than a genius: it takes a man filled with the Spirit of God. Ralph Martin is just such a person, and his new book is fire alarm, tonic and fresh air all wrapped into one."
Msgr. Andrew McLean Cummings, Director of Spiritual Formation, Mount Saint Mary's Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland

Ralph Martin at His Best!
For decades, Ralph Martin has always been impressive, probably because of his humility, his solid spirituality. But this might be his best work. There’s been so much going on in the Church for so long. Listening to Ralph Martin narrate this Audible book has been Spellbinding! I thought I was keeping up on all of this, but he goes a lot further in revealing what he is calling this "crisis." He spells all of this out in gory detail! It's just been incredible that he's addressing all the problems we are dealing with in the Church. He paints a clear picture of what Archbishop Viganò has been speaking about: the surrendering of the Church to the Enemy. It seems that the future is pointing to the Church and Catholics, maybe all Christians, with various difficulties of uncertain proportions. There's schizophrenia in society and in the Church. Good is being taken as evil. Evil is being offered as good and the Truth. Two different camps! I also didn't think I was in favor of Ralph Martin's criticism of Pope Francis' actions, but he first speaks clearly of the respect that we must have for the Pope and then shows how his decisions, writings, and actions are causing and have caused lots of confusion: like Viganò condemning Pope Francis’s recent endorsement of Father James Martin; or Pope Francis' appointment of Cardinals Cupich, Gregory, Tobin to special assignments. Again, Viganò speaks out about this. Ralph Martin insists it's causing lots of confusion. And it’s amazing how Ralph Martin connects all of this with the cancel culture, the violence in our streets, defunding the police, the gender-identity problems, BLM, the programs being put forward in our schools to indoctrinate our children, like critical race theory, the green new deal, transgenderism, destructive measures towards our economy, and lots more to a cleverly devised Marxist tactic to bring our country (and Church) down and create mindless masses subject to a totalitarian form of existence. I think he’s at his best!Interesting! He does an entire chapter, backpedalling to his earlier work, "Will Many Be Saved?" It sets the stage for the major thrust he makes as the root of all this is the non adherence to the words and teachings of the Scriptures and the Second Vatican Council and he supports his claims with quoting of these things word by word. Showing how living the "spirit" of the Council has been a far cry of what the Council actually taught and proposed.I know many people might disagree with him on this, but if anyone would actually read the documents, I believe they would be in agreement with what Ralph Martin is talking to us about

    “Fear! Fire! Foes! AWAKE!!”
These words from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as dark forces of evil are entering the peaceful life of the Hobbits, seem particularly appropriate for Dr. Ralph Martin’s 2020 book, A Church In Crisis: Pathways Forward. Quoting from it: “So many of our ‘Catholics’ have been captured by the enemy and are now enlisting in a campaign to shame and change the Church. The enemy is now well within the gates.” Sometimes a book is published that is so critical, so important that it urgently deserves wide readership. Such is A Church In Crisis.
Dr. Ralph Martin is no stranger to savvy readers of the Catholic scene over the last fifty plus years. From his first publication, Unless the Lord Build the House (1971), to the bombshell A Crisis of Truth (1982) , through The Catholic Church at the End of An Age (1994), to the now classic treatise on the spiritual life, The Fulfillment of All Desire (2006), and up to this latest offering (and others besides!), Martin has shown himself to be a remarkably perceptive and truly prophetic commentator, leader, preacher and teacher within the heart of the Church.
Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of A Church In Crisis is the straightforward, hard hitting way it approaches current difficulties in the Church. Ralph Martin is no one to pull punches. He clearly states over and over again, that what we are now facing, especially in light of Pope Francis’ pontificate, is indeed a very serious crisis! “Unless we face squarely the crisis we are in, there is no hope of discerning an appropriate solution.” This may be the most important point in the whole book.
There is ample evidence given of something seriously off-base in the current Vatican. Laid out more or less chronologically in Chapter One are problematic aspects of the last eleven years: the duplicity of “Who am I to judge?”, the undermining of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and the Family, the Theodore McCarrick scandal and cover-up, the zany, earth-idolizing Amazon synod and the Pachamama idol, the potential poison in footnotes of Amoris Laetitia (the 2015 Apostolic Exhortation, “The Joy of Love”), the constant criticism of doctrine in artificial opposition to pastoral practice, the promotion of UN documents developed by de-population and abortion advocates, the George Soros money involved in Francis’ Global Compact on Education, the selling out of the underground Church in China, the assigning of very problematic cardinals and bishops to crucial positions in the Church, and much, much more. Seeing it stem to stern is a bracing cup of cold water in the face for anyone mesmerized by the news cycle. As Martin says in the book: “What many thought had been swept clean through the ministry of St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict seems now like the person from whom a demon has been expelled but, being empty (not filled with the Lord), seven came back.”
The book doesn’t stop with a brilliant analysis of what’s wrong, though the analysis itself provides cues for fixes. The subtitle is “Pathways Forward” and Martin provides sound advice for how to begin to address the crisis. The keys: courage, not being ashamed of the whole Gospel, disarming the universalist heresy (“virtually everyone is saved in the end”), and above all, overcoming “pastoral passivity” (applies to parents as well as clergy!). There are also helpful sections on Vatican II, culpability and guilt, and the Sexual Revolution.
Calling a book a “tour de force” may have become somewhat commonplace, but if ever a book deserved that praise, A Church In Crisis is one! Again from the book: “This crisis affects the very foundations of faith, the core of the Gospel message of salvation and redemption.” Read it and recommend it to others!!

This book is worth sharing with anyone who is questioning what's going on in our church today. The author is an engaging writer, and his position is well researched, documented and eloquently stated. What he says explains the state of the Catholic Church today wrought and torn by human weaknesses and politics, especially since Vatican II. Its scary to see the paths some in our Church are taking, because the evil one is bound and determined to divide and tear apart what Jesus established. Its unsettling to see our bishops out of sync on critical doctrine. Its unimaginable where this all could be going not only in the United States, but all over the world and in Rome itself. But, we have to remind ourselves this is not the first time our Church has been shaken to the core through the centuries, and the Holy Spirit brought it safely through it all as Jesus promised. He said His church would prevail. We are lay catechists who echo down Jesus' teachings; we take seriously the evidence Ralph Martin presents about our Church. Its up to us to continue to teach the truth and make sure we continue to proclaim the Gospel unfettered and undeterred by politics, personal opinion and cries for the church to conform to whatever today's flavor of modernism that is flung at it. We are the Church that Jesus Christ founded, and that means we believe and teach what he gave us no matter how uncomfortable it may become.

Very informative as to what is really going on in these turbulent times affecting the Catholic Church and the external threats that want to destroy the institution itself. A realization of what we are up against and the deeper meaning of tragic events that are signs of a new end times period already well underway.

This week I have been challenged by a teaching of the Catholic Church at a vulnerable, painful time in our family. I did not want to cause any friction so I was tempted by those powers-that-be to receive communion at the non-Catholic funeral of our murdered grandson. He had been living in the shelter at that denomination. Our whole family has been Baptized Catholic. I recently finished reading Ralph Martin’s book, “A Church in Crisis” and I knew in my heart that I had to follow his advice especially in chapter 12. So I first spent time in prayer. I begged God, “Lord God, you know that my life-line is Your Word and Eucharist. Yet right now I feel like they are holding my head under water. Give to me the grace to stand up for Your Truth , the grace to do what is right. I pray that you bring peace into this situation. God heard and answered my prayer.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the truth about why are churches are empty and are willing to do something about it. Be prepared to be angry, comforted and empowered.

Received this book a few days ago and am only 3 chapters in. These first chapters are worth buying it by themselves and I am sure the rest of book will continue to be excellent. Reading the honest account of where the Church is today made me feel physically sick however, the only way to overcome is to face up to where we are, repent and teach the truth of the gospel. Highly recommended.
